2013 Lab + Hatchery Project Artist: luciana achugar

About luciana achugar

luciana achugar 2014luciana achugar is a choreographer who stands in a category of her own. She creates distinctive multi-sensory environments that invite the audience to participate in the performance experience as an active viewer. She is making important contributions to the field of dance through her re-imagining of the female body and pleasure in performance. Her work provides a critical and necessary commentary about the representations of women that are prevalent in our mass media and culture.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, luciana achugar graduated from Cal Arts and moved to New York City in 1995. After dancing with several influential choreographers including Jeremy Nelson, Will Swanson, Maria Hassabi, Chameckilerner and John Jasperse, and collaborating closely with Levi Gonzalez, achugar has emerged as a choreographic force of her own. Since 2002 she has created seven independent works, for which she has garnered two BESSIE Awards: the first in 2006 for her first evening-length piece Exhausting Love at Danspace Project and more recently in 2010 for PURO DESEO. Her most recent achievements include becoming a 2013 Creative Capital Grantee and receiving a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

achugar developed OTRO TEATRO in VPL’s Lab as part of The Hatchery Project. Through a week-long residency with VPL at Marlboro College, she worked with collaborators to build, experiment and create a new work that used dance as a ritual of becoming and an occasion for communion with the audience.

This residency is part of The Hatchery Project, a multi-site residency initiative between Vermont Performance Lab, the Chocolate Factory, RED Arts Philadelphia and the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography, and is made possible with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation with additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Vermont residency is also made possible through the generous support of VPL’s Creation Fund donors.
